CS Degrees Are Mostly Just Signaling - An Interview With Economist Bryan Caplan (2019-03-18).
Why is most of education a big waste of time and money?
Most of what you study in school you are highly unlikely to ever use in a job—if you even remember it. A lot of what I do in the book is go through the high school curriculum and compare it to what people actually use in the real world and show that the connection is much weaker than propaganda would have you believe.
I do the same thing for college majors to show how few of the classes you take are actually relevant to a job that you're ever likely to get.
So you should still get that piece of paper?
Yeah, the whole idea of signaling is that you want to get in with a group of people. You want to join a successful group, the most successful group that will have you as a member, so you can say, “Hey, look at me! I'm part of this group.”
Even the bad classic schools teach many useful skills.
But they are terribly inefficient regarding money, time, effort.
Nearly half of indebted millennials say college wasn't worth it, and the reason why is obvious (2019-04-11).
College tuition and student-loan debt are higher than ever — the cost of college has made a degree less advantageous over time, one expert said.
Bad schools are the only schools that I have experienced so far.
Bad schools are too lacking and too elitist.
Too much useful knowledge and training is given only by useful parents and useful friends and not by school.
The bad school system is bloated and is boasted to provide beneficial general culture but the bad school system is severely lacking and actively harmful.
Notably regarding a healthy personality.
But also regarding finance.
Why the Rich are Getting Richer | Robert Kiyosaki | TEDxUCSD (2016-07-21).
Rich Dad Poor Dad (2016-10-21).
Bad schools are too expensive and too limiting.
Regarding money and time and effort and motivation.
Many persons can not afford it.
Many persons can afford it only once in their life.
No certificate means no (good) job for life in most cases.
Bad schools are too wasteful.
Too much resources and efforts for what is most likely useless and thus boring.
Too much resources and efforts for what is quickly forgotten.
Too much failure because the student does not perceive the offered help as useful.
AFAIK in all countries: Failing a course or work means failing the entire study program that required much time, money and effort.
Bad schools are too cruel and too harmful.
School is related to many hours of boring useless work.
- This leads to depression and trains the bad habit of wasting time as patience and endurance in a bad or harmful environment.
- This indoctrinates fearful obedience and learned helplessness for life as student and as employee until retirement in case one is still physically alive.
Failure in school means great harm of your life and mental health.
It is too difficult to become teacher.
It could require only a few months or years to become a useful teacher.
Education could grow exponentially.
Modern poverty has enforced needless harm and waste of human work for billions of years (= persons * years of personal life that matter) because of lack of good schools and lack of science and technology including medical care and infrastructure and automation by machines.
Many more billions of years of harm and waste in the future because of retarded development in the past and in the present.
The reason for this waste of persons and time and wealth and health are insane austerity and insane schools and education systems.
Training of useful skills.
This training is optional and free for all.
Training of a good personality for a good life.
This training is mandatory and free for all.
Every person should consider work as healthy, beneficial and pleasant activity.
Any organization that makes many persons feel bad at work is harmful.
Any person that makes other persons feel bad at work should be helped by experts.
There is no need for unpleasant or unsafe work in general.
There must be no tolerance of unpleasant or unsafe work in general.
The personality training is mandatory for 2 reasons:
- It is very important for a good life.
It might not be wanted by the educated person initially.
A child might prefer to play video games instead of learning and interacting with real persons and real problems.
The education of a child is very important because:
Early education is very important because of time constraints.
Any retardation might mean retardation for life.
Early education is very important because of social constraints.
Any retardation might mean retardation and social anxiety for life.
Childhood is the time of development of the brain and the personality.

Because wherever you are struggling, inevitably it is a program in your subconscious that does not support that destination you have been looking for.
This changes with transhumans (machine persons) who live long (no biological age related constraints) and whose brains are controlled by technology.
Persons should do useful work with other persons as soon as possible.
No one should think and feel to waste time with school.
No one should think and feel to have no access to school.
The good school system consists of:
Many trainings for free for all.
A training should be automated if possible.
A training must prepare for the related certification test.
Every certification test is part of the related training for free for all.
Many certification tests for free for all.
A test should be automated if possible.
All questions and answers of all tests are known in advance and available for free for all.
Only numbers and names are allowed to change in tests in order to test understanding.
A test covers very specific skills that are expected to be understood and learned sufficiently in a few days with certain assumed skills.
A certification test is identified by name and by date because test questions can change over time.
For every certification test is indicated:
- What other certifications prepare for it.
- What other certifications it prepares for.

If you keep tabs on science news, you may have heard that DeepMind’s debut went rather well. So well in fact that not only did they take first place, but put a comfortable distance between them and the second place predictor (the Zhang group) in the free modeling (FM) category, which focuses on modeling novel protein folds.
There are dozens of academic groups, with researchers likely numbering in the (low) hundreds, working on protein structure prediction. We have been working on this problem for decades, with vast expertise built up on both sides of the Atlantic and Pacific, and not insignificant computational resources when measured collectively. For DeepMind’s group of ~10 researchers, with primarily (but certainly not exclusively) ML expertise, to so thoroughly route everyone surely demonstrates the structural inefficiency of academic science. This is not Go, which had a handful of researchers working on the problem, and which had no direct applications beyond the core problem itself. Protein folding is a central problem of biochemistry, with profound implications for the biological and chemical sciences. How can a problem of such vital importance be so badly neglected?

World Bee Collapse May Boil Down to a Vicious Mite and an Overlooked Idea (2019-01-18).
- IMO: This research is good. The article presents what went bad.
In the paper, Ramsey and his colleagues show that the varroa mite doesn’t just suck blood but feeds on a vital organ in the honeybee called the fat body, which stores nutrients and filters toxins — sort of like a human’s liver. “It’s less like having a mosquito land on you and drain out your blood, and more like having a mosquito land on you, liquefy your liver, suck that out, and fly away,” Ramsey says.
As Ramsey and his team outline in PNAS, the assumption that varroa mites feed on bees’ blood comes from three papers from the late 1970s, all written in the Soviet Union. American scientists had worked with mediocre English translations of these papers for years, and the scientific community had cited them over and over, but none of these studies actually offered solid evidence that the mites were drinking bee blood.
Cohen — and the bees — have been unfortunate victims of chain citation, but Ramsey’s paper redeems his nearly 40 years of research on parasitic and predatory insects and arachnids. When Ramsey and his then-Ph.D. adviser Dennis VanEngelsdorp, Ph.D., realized their work lined up with what Cohen had been saying all along, they contacted him to discuss their new work. Cohen was thrilled.
“Samuel Ramsey is a class act. A lot of people will get ideas started from somewhere else, then cover it up, and make it look like they invented the wheel,” Cohen says. “He has been very honest and gracious about sharing responsibility, so I really do appreciate that.”
